Some people may wonder why you should stay at cheap hotels in Manchester. Manchester, New Hampshire is in one of prettiest states in New England. Besides being the financial center of the state, it is known for its delightful outdoor activities and year-round beauty. It is only 17 miles south of Concord, down the Merrimack River and has the majestic Uncanoonuc Mountains curve around the western part of the city. This leads to great skiing and snowboarding opportunities at local ski resorts. The temperatures range from about 22 F. in the winter to allow over 50 inches of fun-filled snow to a gorgeous 70 F. summer with low humidity to bring hiking and outdoor sports enthusiasts to the area.
There is something for everyone here. Thousands of sightseers travel every year to see the Old Man of the Mountains, immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The Great Stone Face”. Every season is filled with delightful things to do and see. The city of Manchester is happy to have over 900 acres of parks, beaches, playgrounds and swimming pools. Their site www.manchesternh.gov. Clearly lists the parks and their amenities. They boast of tubing, fishing, roller derby, hiking and more. Because of its historical background (New Hampshire was the 9th state incorporated in the United States), the local museums are highly attended by tourists and locals alike. Manchester is proud to support the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Carpenter Memorial Library, the currier Gallery of Art and the Association Canado-Americaine, to name a few. It is also blessed and enlivened by having St. Anselm, New Hampshire and other colleges in the city. The students and professors occasionally have classes and/or exhibits that the people in Manchester can choose to benefit from. Approximately a fourth of the population is of French-Canadian ancestry so you do see some of that influence though-out the city. The airport is conveniently located in the heart of this area and they are also served by several bus lines and a freight railroad.
Manchester was first called Harrytown when it was settled in 1722, then became Derryfield, but later became Manchester in 1810 and officially became a city in 1846. Many stories are remembered of when Manchester was home to the world’s largest cotton mills. They failed in the 1930’s. Boots, shoes, cotton and wool are the city’s main commercial products today. They have mined granite in the area, in fact the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and the New York City’s United Nation’s building is composed of stone from the Manchester area.
People flock to see the gorgeous New England leaves changing colors, love the outstanding snow in the winter, enjoy the wild flowers like black-eyed susans, violets and daisies that pop up in the spring and plunge in the warm lakes and rivers during the summer. We’ll see you there soon!
